Detroit: Forgotten Promises, Broken Dreams.

A 44 page A4 publication visualising the article "The Last Days of Detroit".

This publication design revolved around expressing the hardships and challenges expressed by Mark Binelli in his article "The last days of Detroit". His article was confronting in its telling of the impacts that corruption and collapse of the manufacturing industry continues to have on Detroit.

The aim of the design was to cohesively use image and text to convey the misfortunes of the American city. Vintage imagery of bright city lights and excited young people in the 70's and 80's was found and then graffitied, to express the broken promise that the city had to a younger generation.

Large type in jarring red and black was applied to chosen spreads when a particular quote was incredibly impactful such as "corruption scandal" and "welcome to Detroit: worser than Vietnam".

The final publication is effective in its execution of being respectful to the various experiences of the people of Detroit, while being engaging through its imagery and large type to show that corrupt political and corporate systems negatively impacted vulnerable citizens.
